To effectively filter iron from well water the water must go through a process called oxidation. Oxidation simply puts the iron in a solid form where it can be removed from the water. There are two ways to achieve oxidation.
- The first uses harsh chemicals such as chlorine.
- The second uses oxygen from the air we breathe. Boerne Joe' Plumbing prefers to use oxygen as a safe and natural way to remove iron from well water.
We can expose the water to oxygen by using venturis, a compressor, or filters that will hold a pocket of air in place. Once we have exposed the iron to oxygen we typically use a contact tank to give the process time to react. Afterwards the iron is in a solid form and can be filtered using a stand-up auto backwashing filter. These filters have an automated backwash so that there is very little maintenance to perform and the filter keeps working to supply clean iron free water to your home.

A U.V. light/filter works by exposing water to ultraviolet treatment by using ultraviolet lamps placed within the treatment chamber. Although the water resides within the chamber for only a few seconds, it receives a sufficient UV dosage to be lethal to microorganisms present in the water. The water quality in the system must be free from turbidity otherwise a 5 micron filter may be needed prior to water treatment.
Most ultraviolet bulbs have a lifespan of about 9,000 hours or one year. With this in mind we recommend replacing the bulb annually and cleaning the sleeve as well. Most of the units we sell will come equipped with an alarm to alert you when the bulb needs to be replaced and the unit cleaned.
